What is live-in care?

Live-in care is for elderly people and younger adults who wish to still enjoy an independent life in the safety and comfort of their own home.

Live-in care assistants give the client control over their care, helping to enable day-to-day living from simple chores, moving around, shopping and providing meals to companionship and other domestic tasks. Live-in care assistants can also offer 1-2-1 care and support for more complex health issues such as:

Some of the key duties are:

  • Personal care – washing and bathing, dressing and continence support if needed.
  • Carrying out a care plan – administering and overseeing medication
  • Companionship – offering emotional support, making conversation, keeping one another company
  • Mobility assistance – some clients require help to move around their home.
  • Domestic tasks – keeping the home clean, laundry and ironing
  • Food preparation and cooking
  • Every day odd-jobs – running small errands or helping with tasks such as collecting prescriptions
  • Medical support – for those clients who require extra support for complex health issues. Care assistant training can be provided to support these needs.

What does it take to be a live-in care assistant?

  • A desire to care for people and improve their quality of life
  • High standard of English language – written and spoken
  • Strong communication skills with a patient and considerate nature
  • The right to work in the UK
  • Undergoing enhanced DBS checks
