About us

Refugee Café is on a mission to help local refugees gain independence by providing support into mainstream employment.  We are launching a cafe which will act as a facility for delivering hospitality training and employment to refugees, whilst providing an eating and meeting place for the entire community. Refugees face many barriers to work, including lack of UK work experience, language skills and social networks, meaning that unemployment amongst refugees is four times higher than the national average. This project supports Lewisham Council’s commitment to welcome 100 families from war-torn countries by 2022.

What we are looking for

Refugee Café are seeking an experienced Training Coordinator to join our team based in Lewisham.  The Training Coordinator will be responsible for delivering a high-quality hospitality and employability training programme to cohorts of six refugees at a time, with a commitment to support each trainee into mainstream employment. This is a new and important role for a dedicated team member who shares the Refugee Cafe vision of reducing poverty and unemployment for refugees.

Key responsibilities include:

l  Developing a Learning Development Framework aimed at equipping trainees with high-quality hospitality and employability skills. The framework will include general literacy, numeracy and business skills and specific hospitality training/qualifications (introduction to UK catering and Level 2 Food Safety and Hygiene training).

l  Delivering the necessary training through workshops or other appropriate mediums.

l  Developing partnerships with other organisations to deliver the training and work experience opportunities.

l  Providing trainees with 1:1 coaching and support to keep trainees engaged, assessing and recording their development and creating individual training plans.

l  Helping with job placements and employability skills.

l  Assisting trainees with running their own market stalls/events.

Essential skills and experience required:

l  Experience of working in a managerial position within hospitality.

l  Experience in designing and delivering learning development frameworks.

l  Experience in planning and delivering high-quality, engaging and impactful learning and training for adults with defined KPIs and within an agreed budget.

l  Ability to work with, and develop others in a positive, respectful and supportive manner.

l  Excellent oral, written and listening skills and administrative and time management skills.

l  Experience working with refugees or vulnerable individuals.

l  Satisfactory DBS (or equivalent) check.

l  Level 3 Food Hygiene Certificate.

l  Knowledge of safeguarding procedures.

l  Passion for Refugee Cafe’s vision and mission.

Desirable:

l  Fluency in a second language, particularly Arabic, would be an advantage.

l  Knowledge of the Lewisham area.

We especially value knowledge by experience. As a charity led by refugees, we welcome applicants from refugee backgrounds. We also actively encourage applications from BAME and LGBT+ communities.
